Since mid-March, about 16.9million Americans have filed jobless claims due to layoffsand shutdowns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. A number of localresidents have expressed having issues getting through to the systemeven knowing where to get started or how it works. Below is some ofthe basic information for anyone looking to file for unemployment inNew York State. Please share it with your contacts. 

Unemployment Benefits

Due to the federal government’spassage of the CARES Act many artists, creative economy workers, andgig workers are now eligible for benefits to compensate for economicimpacts from COVID-19. Primarily, individuals who are self-employedand independent contractors have the ability to file for PandemicUnemployment Assistance or PUA. Please go to theNYSDepartment of Labor website to find out more about eligibilitycriteria.

Applying for Unemployment

If you are eligible please applyonline at labor.ny.gov/signin or call 1-888-209-8124 ifyou do not have access to a computer. You will need to have a numberof pieces of information readily available as you file, which can befound on the New York State Unemployment Assistancewebsite.

When to File

If you are filing a newunemployment insurance claim, the day you should file is based on thefirst letter of your last name.
   
   - Monday: If your last name startswith A – F
   - Tuesday: For last names startingwith G – N
   - Wednesday: For last namesstarting with O – Z

If you missed your filing day, fileyour claim on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Filing later inthe week will not delay your payments or affect the date of yourclaim, since all claims are effective on the Monday of the week inwhich they are filed

 

Please Note:New York State on PAUSE is extended through April29th. Non-essential workforce is directed to continue to workfrom home until at least that day.
