> Dear SMRA Members,
>
> Happy New Year! I hope 2017 brings you health and prosperity.
>
> Every year has ups and downs, but 2016 seemed more determined to knock us down than any other year in recent history. Yet, we have made it to another year.
>
> 2017 will bring its own set of challenges and opportunities. The lessons of the past must be used to meet the challenges we will no doubt face in both our personal lives and our society.

>
> Friends, I look forward to a year of growth and hearing from people like yourself, who are care about particular issues and have a unique prospective to share. I'm just an email away.
>
> Below are some of the highs and lows I have shared in our email newsletters and social media during 2016.

> 1. We launched our election campaign

> A small group of friends and I, #TeamPierre, got together to organize and launch my campaign for Democratic State Committeeman/Male District Leader of New York State's 42nd Assembly District. Not long after, I received the endorsements of the Shirley Chisholm Democratic Club, Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte and the sitting Male Democratic State Committeeman, Ed Powell.

> 2. My community supported me during a horrific time in 2016
>
>
>
>
> Our family feared the worst, after a stray bullet hit my mother while in her kitchen. We were overwhelmed by the support from friends and community members. As I stated then, "No one should live in fear of being hit by a stray bullet in their own home. It is unacceptable and should not become a norm in any community."

> Many young New Yorkers came out to let our Governor and the State Legislature know that all New Yorkers should have access to a quality affordable education. The proposed tuition hikes could have forced more of our students to go further into debt, at a time when college debt is crushing the dreams of young and not so young people across the country, New York should be leading the way on affordable education.

> I had the chance to take questions from community members during a candidate forum organized by the Flatbush Tenants Coalition. The issue of affordable housing remains a major concern for many local residents. This was an opportunity to hear where the candidates from New York State Assembly Districts 42, 43, 44, 57 & 58 and Senate Districts 20 & 21, stand on meaningful issues like affordable housing, jobs, education, childcare, transportation, and gentrification.

>

> Our prayers and condolences go out to the family of Gerald Cummings. His life was unique, but these shooting incidents have become routine. We cannot allow gun violence to become our "new normal". New York State has strong gun laws, but guns come in from states with weak gun laws. Action must be taken on the the national level to prevent the further flow of illegal guns into our city.

> After a long Summer of petitioning, speaking to voters about the issues and what a District Leader does, we won the election. Special thanks to all the donors, volunteers and friends who helped to make it all happen.

>

>
>
> In response to the the Hurricane Matthew, we worked closely with local Haitian-American organizations to identify needs and provide support to those impacted in Haiti. We were grateful to the many people, from various communities, who provided material and financial support in this effort.

>

>
>
> After winning our local election, our team immediately turned our efforts towards putting the first woman in the White House. Our efforts included a fundraiser and helping to send volunteers to Philadelphia.
>
> While she was the most qualified of the two candidates for the presidency, the electoral process did not work in our favor. Some are still coming to terms with this loss. The volunteers and voters who took the bus rides, knocked on the doors, made the phone calls, donated and voted, have every reason to be proud of their work.
>
> Elections are just the beginning, the real work starts the day after an election. I will leave you with the words of Ted Kennedy:
>
> “...the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die.”

>
>
> 9. Back to our local community work
>
>
>
> After the election season, it was time to work on the issues that matter most to Brooklyn residents. Our capacity to affect change and improve the quality of life for our community members starts on the local level. We had the opportunity to organize a community forum with Council Member Jumaane Williams in East Flatbush Village. Many good questions were asked and valuable information was shared.
