prosperity. <br><br>Every year has ups and downs, but 2016 seemed more
determined to knock us down than any other year in recent history.
Yet, we have made it to another year. <br><br>2017 will bring its own
set of challenges and opportunities. The lessons of the past must be
used to meet the challenges we will no doubt face in both our personal
lives and our society. </p>

<br>Our family feared the worst, after a stray bullet hit my mother
while in her kitchen. We were overwhelmed by the support from friends
and community members. As I stated then, "No one should live in fear
of being hit by a stray bullet in their own home. It is unacceptable

University of New York students to prevent a major tuition

<p>Many young New Yorkers came out to let our Governor and the State
Legislature know that all New Yorkers should have access to a quality
affordable education. The proposed tuition hikes could have forced
more of our students to go further into debt, at a time when college
debt is crushing the dreams of young and not so young people across
the country, New York should be leading the way on affordable
education. <br><br></p>

community members during a candidate forum organized by the Flatbush
Tenants Coalition. The issue of affordable housing remains a major
concern for many local residents. <span>This was an opportunity to
hear where the candidates from New York State Assembly Districts 42,
43, 44, 57 & 58 and Senate Districts 20 & 21, stand on
meaningful issues like affordable housing, jobs, education, childcare,

to learn about a Brooklyn dad shot to death after defending his

<p>Our prayers and condolences go out to the family of Gerald
Cummings. His life was unique, but these shooting incidents have
become routine. We cannot allow gun violence to become our "new
normal". New York State has strong gun laws, but guns come in from
states with weak gun laws. Action must be taken on the the national
level to prevent the further flow of illegal guns into our

worked closely with local Haitian-American organizations to identify

<br><strong>8. The Presidential Election Loss</strong><br><br>

our local election, our team immediately turned our efforts towards
putting the first woman in the White House. Our efforts included a
fundraiser and helping to send volunteers to
Philadelphia. <br><br>While she was the most qualified of the two
candidates for the presidency, the electoral process did not work in
our favor. Some are still coming to terms with this loss. The
volunteers and voters who took the bus rides, knocked on the doors,
made the phone calls, donated and voted, have every reason to be proud
of their work. <br><br>

real work starts the day after an election. I will leave you with the
