** DEAR NEIGHBOR
------------------------------------------------------------

June is Gun Violence Awareness Month in New York City. I was proud to kick off the month last weekend during the fifth annual Not In My Hood march, where hundreds of community members joined me in a two-mile march to demand an end to senseless acts of violence. The mission of the month is to give everyone in the city an opportunity to engage in these efforts, so there are dozens of events planned which I encourage you to participate in.

This newsletter includes information on Gun Violence Awareness Month and more, including an update from City Hall, upcoming community events and a list of resources specifically for District 45.

I hope you enjoy, and as always, feel free to reach out to me with your thoughts and ideas. For the most up-to-date news, follow me on Twitter (http://twitter.com/jumaanewilliams) or on Facebook (http://facebook.com/jumaane.williamscouncil) .

Sincerely,

+ MAYOR DE BLASIO SIGNS WILLIAMS' CATCH BASIN BILLS

Today, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed Intro. 240-A into law, sponsored by Council Member Williams, which will increase inspections and require expedited repairs for clogged or damaged catch basins in New York City. A catch basin is a type of storm drain that is normally located adjacent to a curb, where it collects rainwater from the streets and directs it into the sewer. Catch basins can become clogged with refuse and debris, which may lead to localized flooding. Currently the 148,000 catch basins maintained by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) are inspected approximately once every three years. The Council unanimously passed the bill on May 14th.

+ NIKE COMMUNITY STORE OPENS IN DISTRICT 45

Nike is excited to bring a "community store" to Flatbush Junction, which just opened last week!

As a result, Nike chose to locate its first New York Community Store that opened last week just a few hundred feet from this storied intersection.

There are only a handful of other Nike community stores in the company, which are designed to enrich neighborhoods by giving an elevated experience, inspiring children through sport, and providing resources to local organizations.
