WILLIAMS REMEMBERS LEGENDARY LABOR LEADER
VICTOR GOTBAUM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BROOKLYN, NY: Today, Council Member Jumaane D. Williams (D-Brooklyn), Deputy Leader
and Chair of the Council's Housing and Buildings Committee, released the following
statement after labor leader and Brooklyn native Victor Gotbaum passed away yesterday.
He was 93.

STATEMENT FROM COUNCIL MEMBER WILLIAMS

"I extend my prayers for comfort and healing to the family, and friends of Victor
Gotbaum, one of our city's most prominent labor leaders. The Gotbaum family is known
for civic engagement, including his wife, former Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum,
and his five children. As the Executive Director of District Council 37, Gotbaum
 helped keep this city out of bankruptcy during a tumultuous time while saving the
jobs of countless municipal workers. At a young age, he proved to be an advocate
 for communities of more color in Brooklyn by demanding equal pay for his counterparts,
and continued to be an advocate for equality throughout this career. Rightfully
known as Mr. Labor, Gotbaum's relentless goal to better the lives of our working
 class is one we should all strive for as we remember the life and legacy of this
trailblazing advocate."

Council Member Jumaane D. Williams (D-Brooklyn), Deputy Leader, represents the 45th
Council District, which covers Flatbush, East Flatbush, Flatlands, and parts of
Midwood and Canarsie. He is the chair of the Committee on Housing and Buildings,
 and co-chair of the Task Force to Combat Gun Violence. He is a co-founding member
of the Progressive Caucus, and a member of the Black, Latino & Asian Caucus. He
was first elected to office in 2009 and re-elected in 2013.
