<div><strong>Brooklyn</strong>,<strong>NY</strong> - The fatal shootings of <strong>Alton Sterling</strong>, in Louisiana, and <strong>Philandro Castile</strong>, in Minnesota has sparked outrage and protests in communities across the country, including <strong>Dallas, Texas</strong>. Last night in Dallas, a peaceful protest against the outrageous killings of unarmed Black men by police officers was disrupted by sniper fire, killing five police officers, and wounding seven.</div>

<div>There seems to be this idea that if you value Black lives that you devalue the lives of law enforcement officers, and we must not let this narrative drive a wedge between our dialogue. Every one of the individuals that transpired this week whose story has risen to the top of the news cycle, transpired due to needless violence. None of these people deserved to die. </div>

<div>Although, many of us are experiencing tremendous grief and suffering right now, it is important that while we are taking action that we do it in a non-violent manner, and that we take care of ourselves so that we can continue to do the work, and raise our voices because this cannot be the new normal.<br><br>I will continue to work with my committed colleagues <strong>Mayor Bill de Blasio</strong>, <strong>Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke</strong>, <strong>State Senator Kevin Parker</strong>, <strong>Assemblymember N. Nick Perry</strong>, and <strong>Councilmember Jumaane D. Williams</strong> to identify and implement progressive and holistic solutions to address this issue. <br><br>A prayer vigil will be held by <strong>Churches United to Save and Heal (CUSH)</strong>, and the <strong>GodSquad</strong>. The vigil is scheduled to begin at <strong>2:30pm</strong>, and it will be held at <strong>Church and Utica Avenues</strong>. The vigil is a coming together of community to mourn the lives lost and prayer for healing of police-community relations across the nation and in Brooklyn. </div>
