+ COUNCIL PASSES WILLIAMS' FAIR CHANCE ACT

On June 10th, Council Member Williams joined Orange is the New Black author Piper Kerman, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, additional elected officials and criminal justice reform advocates during a rally before the Council voted to pass ** Intro. 318 (http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0019XmANKUkGJCcW9Eg62vKspLKGrgQr5Dat89GGMwgIALvdzrMrxbP31XylGr_mHlOM5BUt0WrKyfuwX3KYxQ4osmsUqgf0rQokpFwenI64Br_Eju1NKfEYUf6hOBKtHiLzmxERC4YztbLN99IxF_WrEq0rgxkR3Mh9mCF7TGlfOR_vQu-QurfLLQTJgOSlPzOOdyxjpMv_6pEEmYJKaqx-yE9jON8r7Xk)
, or better known as the New York City Fair Chance Act, a bill that ensures all New Yorkers, even those with a criminal record, have an equal opportunity to compete for a job. Williams is the lead City Council sponsor of the legislation, at the request of Borough President Brewer, who previously introduced the bill during her council tenure.

The Fair Chance Act prohibits all employers in New York City from asking about a job applicant's conviction record until the end of the hiring process, when the employer has decided the candidate is the best qualified and is the person they want to hire. At that point, employers may inquire about the candidate's criminal background. Though the legislation does not require employers to hire any particular applicant, it delays the background check, thus supplementing preexisting law that says employers cannot deny a job because of a record unless there is a direct relationship to the job. Mayor de Blasio is expected to sign the legislation within the upcoming weeks.

Mrs. Rodriguez was a registered nurse at the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation for 33 years and served as a public member of the Park and Library committee for Community Board 17.

On February 5, 2015, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed into law Intro 620, a piece of legislation Council Member Williams co-sponsored that co-named East 40th Street between Foster & Farragut Roads "Pecola & Nicholas Rodriguez Way." During the ceremony, Council Member Williams was joined by, Assembly Member Nick Perry, members of Community Board 17, including the board's Chair Dr. Gail Reed-Barnett, family and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Rodriguez, including Mrs. Rodriguez's niece Akosua Cobb, family friends Betty Ball, Judith Lewis, Juanita Levell and Imani Parker. + WILLIAMS JOINS HUDDE COMMUNITY TO OPPOSE FORCED CO-LOCATION

On June 11th, the Panel for Educational Policy rejected a plan to allow Success Academy charter school to open inside Andries Hudde Middle School in Midwood. Council Member Williams testified during a public hearing against the forced co-location, and was proud to join the Hudde community to celebrate a much deserved victory. Council Member Williams is not opposed to charter schools as of right, but took a strong stand against the co-location because Hudde did not believe it was in their best interest.

+ WILLIAMS HOSTS MURAL UNVEILING

Four of the eight murals have been permanently installed at the Glenwood Underpass. An additional four will be installed within the upcoming weeks.
Friday, June 12, Council Member Williams joined elected officials and community leaders to unveil the Glenwood Art Gallery "Local Heroes," painted by students of P.S./I.S. 109, in collaboration with Groundswell Community Mural Project. The murals are the second instillation to help brighten up a once neglected underpass with a vibrant tribute to the heroes of Flatbush, including local, national, and international figures. The murals will permanently be on display at the Glenwood Underpass in East Flatbush, on Glenwood Road between East 46th and Schenectady Avenue.

To create the murals, 15 middle school students participated in an intensive Cultural After School Adventures (CASA) Program in partnership with Groundswell's Lead Artist Misha Tyutunik and Assistant Artist Narus Carlos Jefferson. Together, the team collaboratively researched, designed, and fabricated this 480 sq ft mural consisting of seven large panels. During the mural research and design phase, students studied cultural icons - past and present, citywide, national, and international - which enabled them to discover local heroes and underrepresented leaders of more color who have contributed to positive change within their community, the nation, and/or the world.

Recently, Council Member Williams joined the friends and family of longtime community member Inez R. Thompson at the New Life Center to present her with a New York City Council Proclamation on behalf of her centennial birthday. Mrs. Thompson was born on June 10th, 1915 in Georgetown Guyana, also known as the “Garden City of the Caribbean,” where she graduated from Carnegie School of Home Economics. In 1938, she married Samuel G. Thompson, the Chief Engineer of the Fire Service in Guyana and their union was soon blessed with four wonderful children: twins Leon and Noel, Pamela and Desiree. While her husband had a very successful career with the fire service, Mrs. Thompson worked tirelessly as a dedicated, stay-at-home mother.
